Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is a fort throbbing with life, vitality, and activities. It has about 3000 people residing within its walls, and it provides a window to the life that the bygone days might have seen. The walls are lined with handicraft shops, guest houses, and restaurants. The Jaisalmer Fort is proclaimed to be one of the largest forts in the world, and looking at its size, we don’t think it is an exaggeration or an over-statement. The entrance to the fort is from the east, near Gopa Chowk, and upon entering you are greeted with four massive gates that help you zigzag your way to the upper section. The final gate takes you to the fort’s centre called the Dashera Chowk.

The fort was built in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Jaisel. It was renovated and extended by his successors and other rulers subsequently. It witnessed a lot of battles between the Bhatis, the Mughals of Delhi, and the Rathores of Jodhpur.

Fort Palace

The Fort Palace is built over the fort’s main square and partly rests on the top of the Hawa Pol, the fourth gate of the fort. This majestic seven storey palace used to house the former rulers. Once here, pay a visit to the lavish Rang Mahal- the bedroom of the 18th-century ruler Mulraj II. It also houses a gallery of the impressive 15th century sculptures. There is a room that features a vast collection of stamps from the former Rajput states. The major part of the palace is open for public viewing. There is a pavilion styled balcony on the eastern part of the fort, which was mostly used for surveillance, and the drummers used to raise an alarm whenever the fort was under siege. In the last part of the tour, you will be taken from the King’s Palace to the Queen’s Palace, which is another breathtaking marvel.

Patwa ki haveli

It is one of the biggest havelis in Jaisalmer, and the fact that it is located in a narrow line makes for a beautiful contradiction. This haveli, built between 1800 and 1860, by Jain brothers who were proficient in brocade and jewelry business, is divided into five sections. The architecture of the haveli from the outside is superb, and the interiors give you an interesting insight into the life and times of the aristocrats in the 19th century.

 Sam sand dunes

Just a little further from the city lie the silky Sam sand dunes. The band of dunes is about 2km long, and offers stunning views. You can either choose to camp here or stay only till sunset, and enjoy the mesmerizing views of the sun going down as you bask in the glory of the sand. Gadsisar Lake

This beautiful artificial lake was built by Maharawal Gadsi in the 14th century for rainwater conservation. In the arid regions of Jaisalmer, the people relied on this lake to quench their thirst. It is a beautiful place to visit during the wee morning hours when you can catch the golden yellow rays of the sun.

Salim Singh ki haveli

Another extension to the haveli fetish of Jaisalmer, Salim Singh ki haveli is unusual and mystic to say the least. The top most structures of this haveli were destroyed but the remaining parts stand firmly to tell the story of past grandeur. The workmanship of this haveli is intricate and marvelous.
